Christmas Symbol Quilt Along -- Christmas Candle block and tutorial

Welcome to the Christmas Symbols Quilt Along!  The fourth symbol of the quilt along is a candle.

John 8:12 :  I am the light of the world:  he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker!  I'm enjoying designing candlesticks -- there are so many options!  I'm going to test the pattern a bit more and may come back with corrections and please let me know if you have any questions.

 Tutorial:  Cut the following pieces

Cut:
Candle:  1 1/2 x 4"         Flame:  1 1/2" square

Candle holder:  Cut strips 2 x 6 1/2"; 1 3/4 x 4"; 1 1/4 x 1 1/2"

Background (BG):  (2) 2" squares & (2) 1 3/4" squares (draw a diagonal line on the back of each)
(2) 1 3/4 x 1 1/2"  1 3/4" squ--correction    (2) 2 3/4 x 10 3/4"      (2) 3 x 4"
(2) 1 3/4 x 2 1/4"                                               (2) 2 x 3"
2 1/4" square cut diagonally twice                 (2) 6 1/2 x 1 1/2"

Step 1.  Place 2" BG squares on 2 x 6 1/2" and 1 3/4" squares on 1 3/4" x 4" strips as shown and sew along the diagonal lines.

Step 2. Trim leaving 1/4" seam allowance.  Sew 2 sets of the trimmed off triangles together to make 2 HSTs (half square triangles) and square up to 1 1/4" which with the 1 1/2 x 1 1/4" piece will form the top tier of the candle holder)

Step 3.  Sew the triangles (from the 2 1/4" square, which you cut diagonally) to the sides of the "flame".

This shows pieces for handle on the left.  If you don't want a handle, just cut another strip 10 5/8 x 2 3/4".  Note:  Cut the flame corner triangles (2 1/4" square cut diagonally twice) from background fabric.  Also cut (2) 2" squares, (2) 1 3/4" squares, and a 1 1/2" x 2 1/4" strip.
Step 4.  Line up the sections as shown above and below. (Picture above has dimensions so you know what goes where. )  Also when squaring up the flame block, square up to 1 7/8".

Sew center sections together, squaring up as you go.  Note: Some strips may be slightly over sized to allow for squaring up.  Center sections should be 6 1/2" wide but if they turn out to be 6 1/4", its okay because the outer borders are oversized so you can still get your 10 1/2" block.

Step 5
Adding a handle to the candlestick holder.
1.  In lieu of (1) 10 5/8" x 2 3/4" side border cut:
Candle holder fabric (2) 1" x 1 1/4" and (2) 1 x 2 1/4"
Background:  1 1/4" squ.   1 1/2 x 2 1/4" strip;  2 x 2 3/4" strip; 7 1/2" x 2 3/4" strip

2. Sew 1 x 1 1/4" handle pieces to 1 1/4" BG square, then sew 1 x 2 1/4" to sides to form a
 2 1/4" square.

Sew 1 1/2" x 2 1/4" piece to right (or left if you want you handle on the left) side of handle.  Trim to 2 1/4 x 2 3/4".  Sew 2 x 2 3/4 piece to the bottom and 7 1/2 x 2 3/4" background piece to the top to for the border with handle section.

Sew all sections together for a fun candle block!  Change the candle stick sections to get different looks.
I turned all candle stick sections upside down, but the bottom and middle sections are too close in size, so took it apart and reassembled as you see below.
